The China Trade Deal – Cause for Celebration
Over the last few days, the farming news airwaves have been full of what is being labelled as the ‘historic trade deal’ between Australia and China.
It’s always possible to be a little bit cynical about politicians in suits shaking hands with each other in front of their respective national flags but this time there does seem to have been a very real achievement.
The basic point is that in four key areas of agricultural exports, over the next few years there will be a steady reduction in tariffs and their eventual elimination in some cases.
That just has to be good news for some sectors of New South Wales’s farming industry and it will open the door to some really stiff competition against European, South American and perhaps North American exporters.
Of course, almost inevitably it’s not entirely good news for everyone.
The rice and sugar negotiations appear to have come to no firm conclusion and that means that producers in those sectors will be unlikely to be dancing in the streets with joy as the handshakes and bubbly proliferate to one and all in the corridors of power. Now at White’s Tractors we are specialists in things such as Kubota ride on mowers and we’re proud to proclaim that we are not politicians! Even so, we can’t help commenting that any progress in removing politics, tariffs and taxes from the challenges of exporting our agricultural produce to the wider world just has to be a step in the right direction.
As much of the world remains stuck in either stagnation or semi-recession, after nearly six years, it is to be hoped that politicians realise that enterprise needs rather less of their intervention and rather more empowering of business individuals around the planet to do what they are good at – i.e. running a business!
So, let’s hope this is a first step for more similar progress to come in future.
